Siemens AG is betting Poland’s surge in defense and infrastructure investment will boost demand for industrial automation and digital technology as the German engineering group positions itself to capture a lucrative slice of the country’s spending boom.

Poland has secured as much as 43.7 billion euros ($49 billion) under the European Union’s SAFE defense-loan program, making it the bloc’s biggest beneficiary. Warsaw is deploying the funds to inject significant capital into its domestic defense industrial base as it responds to the security threat posed by neighboring Russia.

While arms makers producing artillery, ammunition, armored vehicles and drones are the primary beneficiaries, the massive buildup is also spurring demand for the technology used to expand, automate and digitize factories.

The defense industry “could become Poland’s new economic flywheel,” Maciej Zielinski, head of Siemens Poland, said in an interview.

The immediate impact of SAFE is mainly the expansion of manufacturing capacity but advanced digital solutions will play a growing role in defense production in the coming years, according to Zielinski. Siemens is already seeing increased demand in Poland from companies whose products have both civilian and military applications, he said.

“A good example is mobile radar systems, which must be transported, deployed and put into operation quickly, safely, and with a high degree of automation,” Zielinski said. “Solutions of this type require the most advanced control systems.”

Siemens has supplied automation and control technology to the automotive and aerospace industries for decades, giving it expertise that can be applied to defense manufacturing, he said.

Data-Center Ambitions

Beyond defense, Siemens sees data centers as another potential source of growth in Poland as investment in artificial intelligence drives demand for computing infrastructure. The company’s businesses span industrial automation, rail equipment as well as factory software and it has been expanding its AI and automation offerings.

Poland still trails markets such as Spain and Portugal in attracting data-center investment, largely because its power system remains heavily reliant on relatively costly and carbon-intensive coal. Still, Zielinski expects more projects to emerge, supported partly by EU funding and growing domestic demand.

“Poland has many advantages in this regard,” he said, citing the size of its 38-million people market, its location, climate and pool of skilled workers.

Siemens can support data center projects from the design stage, including by creating “‘digital twins” to simulate power supply, automation and cooling requirements, through to supplying and physically integrating equipment, according to Zielinski.

The broader investment wave could also help Poland sustain robust economic growth of around 3% over the next five years if the country capitalizes on the opportunity effectively, he said.

“Poland, as a country with a strong industrial base, is a very important market for Siemens.”
