Sandoz Group AG Chief Executive Officer Richard Saynor said the move by US President Donald Trump to potentially impose tariffs on generic medicines is more of an opportunity than a threat to its business.

The maker of generics and biosimilar drugs is currently holding “very, very constructive dialog with very senior members of the administration,” about how best to deliver high-quality, affordable drugs to American patients from European and US platforms, he said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Last month, Trump said generic drug manufacturers must move production to the US or face a 100% import duty from August 2028, potentially putting at risk the supply of low-cost medicines that millions of Americans rely on. The move is aimed at “reshoring” generic pharmaceutical production in the US — a country where Sandoz has only one facility that it’s currently in the process of closing.

Saynor said the US is focused on delivering better security of supply of key drugs.

“Today, for example, the US military has been buying antibiotics from China,” he said. “Clearly that is not sustainable but the only remaining penicillin facility left in the Western world is in Austria.”

Saynor spoke after Sandoz reported sales of 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.7 billion) in the second quarter, boosted by record growth in biosimilars, which are copies of biological medicines for cancer, arthritis, and other diseases.

The shares rose as much as 8.6% in early trading Wednesday. The stock was up about 11% this year through Tuesday’s close.

Sandoz is in a “golden decade” where about $650 billion of drugs are due to lose patent protection, opening up opportunities to produce cheaper copies, Saynor said.
