Goldman Sachs Group Inc.must pay nearly £1.5 million ($2 million) to a former compliance manager who was unfairly dismissed and faced sex discrimination linked to his six months of parental leave, a London tribunal has ruled.
The bank discriminated against Jonathan Reeves, who worked in Goldman’s compliance department in London, when it unfairly dismissed him in 2022, the employment tribunal ruled in 2024. At the time the court had found that “there was a continuing discriminatory state of affairs” and all those episodes “were linked to him, as a man, having taken parental leave.”
The discrimination had a “particularly insidious effect” on Reeves, the judge said in a compensation judgment made late on Wednesday. “What should have been a time to focus” on his family was instead “consumed by stress and anxiety resulting from” the bank’s treatment of him, the judge said.
The case is one of the most prominent UK disputes over allegations that a bank discriminated against a father who took extended parental leave. Firms in the City have expanded paid parental-leave benefits over the past decade as part of a broader effort to make workplace policies more gender-neutral and encourage more women to return to work sooner.
Citi Boosts US Parental Leave to Compete With Wall Street Rivals
“We strongly disagree with this decision,” the US bank said in a statement. “Goldman Sachs is a market leader in paid parental leave and encourages all working parents regardless of gender to take the full 26 weeks paid leave,” the bank said.
During the trial, Reeves’ lawyers argued that he was made redundant after taking contractual parental leave, while a female employee taking comparable leave for childcare reasons would not have been dismissed. Goldman denied the allegations and said his dismissal arose from concerns about his performance.
The tribunal sided with Reeves in the 2024 ruling but found there was a 50% chance that the bank would have dismissed him anyway as part of a redundancy process. Reeves sought £8.9 million at a 2025 hearing while Goldman’s lawyers countered his award should be no more than £239,717.
The £1.5 million award includes compensation for injury to feelings, past and future losses and loss due to discrimination.
“This judgment is noteworthy for its detailed consideration of stigma damages since this is a rarely explored aspect of employment law,” Reeves’ lawyer Jo Keddie said. The tribunal found it would take three years for Reeves to secure a permanent position as a result of the stigma caused by the litigation and projected salary deficits lasting up to eight years, Keddie said.
A 2023 UK government analysis found that only 5% of eligible working fathers in the country have taken up what is known as shared parental leave since it was introduced in 2015.
