Spain’s Naturgy to Build $344 Million Australia Renewables Plant
In this Article
Spanish energy firm Naturgy Energy Group SA said its Australian unit will invest more than 300 million euros ($344 million) to build its largest renewables project in the country, combining solar power and battery storage.
The facility, with 330 megawatts of solar capacity backed by 180 megawatts of battery storage, will be located in the Fraser Coast region of Queensland, according to a statement. The unit, Global Power Generation, has signed a 10-year agreement for the sale of power from the plant, it added, without saying who the deal was concluded with.
Hybrid projects such as Fraser Coast are expected to play an increasingly important role in grids across the world, as pace of transmission buildout lags behind renewables installations, causing constraints. Including battery systems enables surplus green energy to be stored and used when required.
The Fraser Coast project is now entering construction, and is expected to begin operations in 2028, Naturgy said.
Naturgy owns 75% of the Australian unit, with the Kuwait Investment Authority controlling the remainder, according to the statement. It has an operational portfolio of 1.3 gigawatts in the country, spanning wind, solar and batteries.
