One data center developer has a unique plan to squash pushback from community residents in Kansas: Give them $1,000 a year for the next decade.
Digital Realty Trust Inc., which has partnered with tech companies like Microsoft Corp. and Nvidia Corp., is offering the payments to each household in De Soto, Kansas, near its planned 1,400-acre data center known as Astra Enterprise Park.
The money will come from Digital Realty’s $20 million community investment fund, according to Whitney Lange, communications director for De Soto. Currently the city, which has a population of about 7,000, is working with the company to finalize the details of how the proposal would be administered and distributed, potentially as credits for property taxes or utility bills.
“This commitment is designed to deliver tangible benefits for De Soto residents while we invest for the long term,” a spokesperson for Digital Realty said in a statement.
Like in many places across the country, data center plans in De Soto have drawn pushback from residents. A May petition, which is now closed, with over 650 supporters called for a two-year moratorium, citing concerns about health, noise, water use and electricity rates. The mayor told residents that these were taken into consideration during the review process.
Those in favor of data centers cite the economic opportunities for small towns. During construction, the data center is expected to employ more than 1,000 workers, and once operational, it will support 250 full-time jobs. Construction is expected to start next year.
While an end-user has not been announced for Digital Realty’s site, the company works with major technology firms including Oracle Corp. and Amazon.com Inc., and has partnered with Blackstone Inc. on developments in the US and Europe.
Digital Realty is not the only developer trying to sweeten its deal in De Soto. Beale Infrastructure, a Blue Owl-backed developer that has faced resistance for its $3 billion data center in the city, launched a $250,000 community investment fund for all of its projects in May.
Earlier this month, De Soto struck another agreement with Beale to lessen water usage, fund $9.4 million in water infrastructure and establish a separate community benefit fund of up to $20 millionfor future public infrastructure.
