One of the biggest companies in the world is entering a new era. Apple’s incoming chief executive, John Ternus, is taking the reins from Tim Cook, who has run the company since 2011. Ternus is a longtime employee who was in charge of hardware at Apple, which should be useful given the dozens of new products the company is soon expected to unveil. While everyone else is chasing artificial intelligence dominance, Apple is going big on gadgets.
This week on Everybody’s Business from Bloomberg Businessweek, hosts Stacey Vanek Smith and Max Chafkin talk with Bloomberg managing editor Mark Gurman, who points out that under Cook, Apple released three new products in 15 years — AirPods, the Apple Watch and the Vision Pro VR headset. Ternus is expected to roll out that many products next week alone, including a folding iPhone.
Gurman discusses how, while arguably having missed the boat on AI, Apple may be positioning itself as the “responsible player” in the AI space, and how this slow uptake could work in its favor.
Then Chafkin and Bloomberg senior editor Jason Gale discuss their recent profile of virologist Bob Garry. After decades of groundbreaking work on HIV, Ebola and other deadly viruses, Garry found himself in a storm of controversy surrounding the origins of Covid-19. He published a paper concluding that the coronavirus was not lab-grown, but likely occurred naturally and was transferred to humans in a wildlife market in China. In response, the Trump Administration has come after Garry, stripping him of his funding. Garry has been harassed and received death threats. Chafkin and Gale talk about what’s happened to him and what this means for other US scientists and scientific research.
