Barclays Plc’s chief executive officer called on the UK government to resist increasing taxes on banks in next month’s budget, saying lending and investing would be a better use of the sector’s capital.

CS Venkatakrishnan told Bloomberg TV’s Dani Burger he’s had positive interactions with Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey and the rest of the new government, and thought they understood the importance of economic growth.

“It’s an issue of principle. We think we can best help the country grow by investing in the country and lending into the country and therefore we need all the capital we can to do that,” he said. “We want to contribute to growth in every postcode,” he added, echoing a pledge made by Andy Burnham’s government.

Burnham is considering various tax-raising options for his government’s first budget on Oct. 28, including higher levies on banks, to repair the damage done to Britain’s public finances by a surge in borrowing costs following the outbreak of war in Iran. The previous administration under Keir Starmer resisted calls from within the Labour Party to impose a levy after a strong run of earnings at Britain’s major banks.

“The amount of revenue that the government gets out of all of this across the banking system isn’t that great. What it does is send a signal to any industry that’s successful that there can be a Damocles’s sword hanging over your success,” Venkatakrishnan said. “Increasing that percentage take is not a signal for growth, but let’s see what happens.”

Venkatakrishnan also said Barclays was preparing some staff for the spread of AI in the workplace. “There are certainly some types of jobs that get affected as efficiency increases. What we are doing is trying to train people so they can apply for different jobs and to develop the skills that will make them more successful when the AI impact is fully seen,” he said.

As businesses around the world adopt AI to increase efficiency, “the size and the shape of our workforce will change and we’ve got to make those transitions easy for companies, for individuals, through reskilling programs, through training programs,” he said.
