Liquefied natural gas prices in Asia rose to the highest in more than three years after hostilities between the US and Iran escalated, raising concerns over prolonged disruptions to flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

Spot LNG climbed to $25.908 per million British thermal units late Wednesday, the highest since December 2022, according to traders. Prices have more than doubled from pre-war levels, with elevated costs weighing on the demand and budgets of some countries in Asia.

The renewed fighting followed weeks of relative calm in the Middle East, with the flare-up helping drive LNG up more than 5% this week. US President Donald Trump said attacks on Iran would likely be short-lived, but warned that “we’re prepared to do another one any time we want.”

Higher LNG prices threaten to push utility bills even higher for consumers at a time when countries are grappling with supply shocks triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, alongside the Russia-Ukraine war.

China, one of the world’s biggest buyers, likely cut LNG imports in August as high spot prices hurt demand among industrial users. Pakistan is also facing a worsening electricity crunch after scrapping an emergency tender because the offer it received was too expensive. Before the war, about a fifth of the world’s LNG supply flowed through Hormuz.
