New Zealand’s trade deficit with China widened in the 12 months through September amid a surge in imports of electric vehicles and mobile phones.
The South Pacific nation’s imports from China rose 21% to NZ$21.4 billion ($12 billion) in the 12 months through September, Statistics New Zealand said Monday in Wellington. Exports to China rose 4% to NZ$20.6 billion in the same period, leaving a trade deficit of NZ$893 million.
Imports just in September jumped above NZ$2 billion to a new record for any month.
New Zealand had a trade deficit with China of around NZ$170 million in the 12 months through June — its first since 2017 — as imports climbed. There has been a jump in purchases of electric vehicles as the Middle East crisis pushes up gasoline prices, as well as continued strong demand for smartphones, flat-screen televisions and other electronics and machinery despite a sluggish domestic economy.
Monday’s report showed electric vehicle imports from China surged to NZ$865 million in the 12 months through September from NZ$319 million a year earlier. Total car imports from China, including used vehicles, more than doubled over that period to NZ$1.46 billion.
China’s BYD Co. was the fourth-largest seller of new cars in New Zealand in the nine months through September, according to Motor Trade Association data. Fellow Chinese automakers SAIC Motor Corp. and Great Wall Motor Co. were ranked fifth and sixth.
Electrical machinery imports from China rose 31% to NZ$4.5 billion in the 12 months through September, the report also showed, with telephones comprising NZ$1.4 billion of that.
China remains New Zealand’s biggest export customer, buying around 24% of all shipments with a focus on dairy products, logs and fruit.
