Turkish consumer confidence suffered its sharpest monthly drop in three years following a fund crisis that triggered a stock rout and left investors unable to access some of their assets.

The consumer confidence index fell 7.7% in October to 84.8, the lowest level since January, according to data published Thursday by the Turkish Statistical Institute. Based on household surveys, the index ranges from zero to 200, with figures below 100 indicating pessimism.

October’s reading is the steepest monthly decline since August 2023. It comes a month after implosions in Turkey’s fund industry sent shockwaves across the broader market.

The sudden drop signals that “the unease generated by the fund liquidations spread well beyond financial markets into household behavior more broadly,” said Selva Demiralp, a professor of economics at Koc University in Istanbul.

Demiralp separately pointed to Koc survey data showing that the share of households planning to put savings into investment funds fell to 21% from 28%, the biggest monthly change among all asset classes. Households instead shifted toward more traditional havens, including gold, foreign currency and time deposits.
