Eni SpA and TotalEnergies SE are close to giving the go-ahead for a gas project off the coast of Cyprus, as Europe seeks to secure supplies closer to its shores.
The two energy companies are “working hard” to make a final investment decision on the development of the Cronos field by the end of July, TotalEnergies Chief Executive Officer Patrick Pouyanné said on a conference call Thursday.
The project would add a nearby gas source for European countries that have seen two supply shocks in four years. The Iran war choked off a fifth of global liquefied natural gas flows as Europe continues to seek alternatives to Russian supplies following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The project would also mark a milestone for Cyprus, unlocking the first commercial development of the island’s offshore gas resources more than a decade after the country’s initial discoveries. The goal is for the gas to be liquefied in Egypt for exports by tanker to European markets starting in 2028, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said in May.
Pouyanné said the project, a 50-50 joint venture operated by Eni, will give Total “access to 1.4 million tons of LNG in Egypt just in front of the European market,” and may pave the way for other projects in Cyprus.
Eni representatives didn’t immediately respond to a Bloomberg request for comment.
