Boryung (003850.KS) has loaded a "moon time capsule" containing winning entries from a youth space medicine competition onto a U.S. lunar lander. The company plans to send the students' ideas, along with Korean historical and cultural materials, to the lunar surface through a mission scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
Boryung said on the 26th that it had placed the time capsule, which holds winning entries from the HIS Youth space medicine competition it co-hosted with the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, aboard the Trinity lunar lander built by U.S. firm Intuitive Machines. It is the first time a time capsule carrying works created by Korean students has been mounted on a lunar lander.
The capsule contains a digital storage device holding 51 winning entries from the elementary school division of the 2025 and 2026 competitions. Historical and cultural materials from the National Folk Museum of Korea, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Gwacheon National Science Museum were included as well. The lander will fly on the IM-3 mission under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. It is scheduled to touch down around March next year in the moon's Reiner Gamma region to study magnetic anomalies and the space environment.
A tour of U.S. space institutions by the middle and high school division winners of the third HIS Youth competition has also concluded. The students visited NASA, Intuitive Machines, Rice University, the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine from the 19th to the 22nd of this month. At Baylor College of Medicine, they presented research proposals to NASA officials and Yi So-yeon, South Korea's first astronaut, and received mentoring from experts.
During the tour, Moon Jae-sung, a student at Daedeok Middle School and a member of grand prize-winning team Perilla Lunaris, attached the time capsule to the lander together with Boryung CEO Kim Jung-kyun. The team won the top award for research comparing the light absorbance of lutein in perilla leaves in a simulated microgravity environment.
HIS Youth is a youth space medicine competition that Boryung and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity have co-hosted since 2024. This year's edition was held under the theme of solving human health problems on the moon, drawing about 1,700 applicants including students and teaching advisers.
"This project goes beyond sending HIS Youth winning entries to the moon. It is a message that carries Korea's present and future to the next generation," Kim said. "I will be cheering for the day when students who came through HIS Youth grow into astronauts of the future and go find the time capsule themselves."
