APR (278470.KS) said it has confirmed the potential to enhance hair loss treatment using a core technology applied to its beauty devices. The company plans to develop the technology into a platform that can be applied broadly to scalp care, hair health and hair loss treatment.
APR said on the 13th that the results of its industry-academia joint research on scalp health improvement and androgenic hair loss treatment based on radiofrequency (RF) microporation have been published in the international journal Pharmaceutics.
The study used the RF microporation technology applied to the Air Shot mode of APR's home beauty device, the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro X2. Researchers examined how much the technology improved drug delivery into the skin and hair regeneration when used together with topical minoxidil (MNX) in animal models.
RF microporation uses precisely controlled radiofrequency energy to create temporary microchannels in the stratum corneum of the scalp. This helps active ingredients applied to the scalp reach deeper into the skin more effectively. In preclinical research, applying RF microporation together with minoxidil increased deposition in the epidermis and dermis by up to 2.40 times compared with minoxidil alone. In androgenic hair loss animal models, hair coverage as well as hair length and thickness also improved significantly.
APR said the significance of the technology lies in its potential to address the drug delivery limitations of existing topical hair loss treatments. In particular, it could offer an alternative for improving treatment outcomes for women who face restrictions on oral hair loss medications or for patients who must rely mainly on topical treatments. Finasteride, the main ingredient in Propecia, a leading treatment for male pattern hair loss, is strictly restricted for women of childbearing age because of risks including birth defects in male fetuses. For this reason, minoxidil, applied directly to the scalp, is recommended as the main drug treatment for female pattern hair loss.
APR expects RF microporation can be expanded into a technology that improves absorption not only of minoxidil but of various active ingredients related to the scalp and hair. The company said it can be used as a platform technology covering scalp environment management and hair health as well as hair loss treatment. It plans to conduct further clinical research to verify the applicability, efficacy and safety of the technology in hair loss treatment. Through this, the company aims to secure sufficient clinical evidence and broaden the scope of the technology in scalp and hair care.
"This publication in an international journal shows that we are continuously verifying the operating principles and efficacy of our own device technology scientifically, beyond simply developing products," an APR official said. "We will continue to develop new technologies based on differentiated R&D competitiveness and work to introduce innovative products that apply them."
