Smart farming is moving beyond the stage of technology development and demonstration into full-scale commercialization. With the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), smart farms are evolving beyond simple agricultural facilities into an industry that concentrates various manufacturing technologies, including construction, lighting and environmental control.
According to industry sources on the 15th, smart farms are rapidly expanding their scope of application into actual farms and industrial sites. Daedong is fostering smart farming as a core business for the group. Recently selected as the preferred bidder for the national agricultural AX platform, the company is planning to build an AI smart greenhouse in Muan, South Jeolla Province. As demand for structural materials and various facilities arises during greenhouse construction, the company's strategy is to expand the business through synergy with group affiliates such as Daedong Metal.
As smart farm commercialization progresses, the performance of specialized companies is also becoming visible. Green Plus, which handles smart farm greenhouse construction and supplies materials, saw its earnings improve as orders secured last year were fully reflected. First-quarter revenue this year reached 31.6 billion won, and its order backlog exceeded 60 billion won, while the company is also pursuing entry into the Middle East market.
As the domestic smart farm market grows, participation by overseas companies is also expanding. Global lighting company Signify is applying plant-growth LED lighting solutions to indoor and outdoor greenhouses. According to the company, introducing lighting solutions to smart greenhouses can improve energy efficiency by up to 25% and reduce labor costs by 20%. "In Korea, demand for smart farm adoption is rapidly increasing due to sharp climate change," a Signify official said. "Inquiries for customized solutions optimized for each farm's crops and cultivation environment are also continuously increasing."
Technology application is also accelerating in the field of precision agriculture. Chinese company DJI has supplied more than 600,000 agricultural drones to about 100 countries worldwide, leading the spread of precision agriculture. DJI said that using drones can help reduce carbon emissions by 51 million tons and water usage by 410 million tons.
The government is also throwing its weight behind expanding the adoption of smart agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is expanding related investment by pursuing projects such as building a national agricultural AI transformation (AX) platform and promoting open-field smart agriculture. The policy aims to foster smart agriculture as a key alternative that can boost productivity in response to rural aging and a declining farming population.
With the market expansion of private companies aligning with the government's smart agriculture fostering policy, the domestic market is expected to grow even faster. Samjong KPMG projected that the domestic smart farm market will more than double from 4.1 trillion won in 2025 to 9.4 trillion won in 2030.
"Smart farming is shifting away from the past stage of verifying technology into a business that is applied to actual agricultural sites," an industry official said. "As AI and automation technologies advance, demand will expand across the manufacturing sector, playing the role of a new growth axis."
