Microchip Technology has introduced an industrial Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspan injector that delivers up to 90 watts of power over Ethernet cables without requiring replacement of existing industrial network switches.
PoE enables both data and electrical power to be transmitted through a single Ethernet cable. A midspan injector is installed between a network switch and connected devices, such as cameras or sensors, to add power to the Ethernet link. The approach allows existing non-PoE switches to continue operating while supplying both power and data to connected equipment over a single cable.
Microchip announced on July 20 the launch of its industrial PoE midspan injector, the PD-9601GCI.
The PD-9601GCI complies with the IEEE 802.3bt standard. IEEE 802.3bt is a high-power PoE specification that uses all four twisted pairs within an Ethernet cable to deliver up to 90W of power from the power sourcing equipment. Earlier PoE standards typically used two wire pairs and supported maximum power output of 15.4W or 30W.
The PD-9601GCI delivers up to 90W of power and supports 10/100/1000 Mbps data transmission over a single Ethernet cable. In addition to standard sensors, it can power high-performance pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras with motors, industrial wireless access points, displays and edge computing devices with higher power requirements.
The device operates across a temperature range of minus 40 degrees Celsius to 75 degrees Celsius. It features an IP30-rated metal enclosure, industrial-grade surge protection and dual DC power inputs supporting voltages from 20V to 60V.
Microchip said the product was designed to provide reliable operation in industrial environments exposed to vibration and sudden voltage fluctuations.
Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip's Networking and Connectivity business unit, said, "Many existing networks were not originally designed to fully support single-cable PoE deployment. The PD-9601GCI makes it easier to deliver power to smart devices in factories and other industrial environments."
Microchip said the PD-9601GCI is already in mass production.
