Kolon Industries (120110.KS) has expanded its polyurethane (PU) artificial leather production line, moving to strengthen its automotive interior material portfolio.
Kolon Industries said on the 29th that it held a completion ceremony for the PU production line at its Gimcheon Plant No. 1 in North Gyeongsang Province on the 28th. The company invested approximately 24 billion won to build the artificial leather production system over about 17 months, from February last year to June this year.
PU artificial leather is a material that reproduces the texture and feel of natural leather while offering processability and durability. It is widely applied to major automotive interior parts such as seats, door trims, and consoles. It has recently drawn greater attention amid the automotive industry's trend of expanding leather-substitute materials and growing demand for eco-friendly materials.
To further enhance the product's eco-friendliness, Kolon Industries applied technology to its production line that reduces hazardous substances such as benzene and toluene. The company also installed continuous-process equipment that minimizes idle time between processes, raising production efficiency.
Kolon Industries plans to respond quickly to customers' demands for eco-friendliness and premium quality, while also building a technological foundation to expand into overseas markets where PU artificial leather demand is expected to grow. The company supplies various automotive interior materials, including fabric, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), to global customers. The company expects the completion of the PU line to serve as an opportunity to expand its total solution capabilities for automotive interiors.
"This completion of the PU production line is an investment to respond proactively to the automotive interior material market, which is rapidly being reshaped around eco-friendliness and premium quality," a Kolon Industries official said. "Going forward, we will provide automotive interior material solutions optimized for customer demand based on differentiated process technology and our material portfolio, and we will work to expand our new customer base and strengthen our business competitiveness."
