ADEL, a developer of treatments for degenerative brain diseases, is accelerating its KOSDAQ listing and follow-up technology transfers on the strength of a large-scale licensing deal with Sanofi. Having earned validation from a global big pharma through the technology transfer of its Alzheimer's disease candidate "ADEL-Y01," the company plans to secure a second global deal within one to two years, led by its follow-up antibodies and brain delivery platform.
Meeting with Seoul Economic Daily at ADEL's headquarters in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, on the 19th, ADEL CEO Yoon Seung-yong said, "Since the Sanofi contract, global pharmaceutical companies' trust in our data and R&D operational capabilities has increased." He added, "For our follow-up pipeline, we will prioritize the Alzheimer's treatment 'ADEL-Y04' in pursuing technology exports."
Last December, ADEL licensed out ADEL-Y01, then in Phase 1 clinical trials, to Sanofi in a deal worth a total of $1.04 billion. ADEL-Y01 targets a core pathogenic site closely linked to the progression of Alzheimer's disease, rather than the terminal end of the tau protein that had failed in previous clinical trials. It is designed to selectively remove only pathological tau rather than normal tau, enhancing safety and efficacy. Sanofi has currently assigned the candidate its own code number "SAR449548" and is carrying out the technology transfer process to resume clinical trials.
The candidate ADEL is next pinning its hopes on is ADEL-Y04, an antibody therapy that selectively targets "apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4)," a representative genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. "Unlike existing competing antibodies that have the problem of also binding to the normal protein 'ApoE3,' we are developing ours with the goal of increasing target selectivity," Yoon explained. "It is currently in the cell line development and preclinical research stage." Another candidate, "ADEL-Y03," is also being reviewed for possible expansion into Alzheimer's disease as well as aging, inflammation, and fibrosis-related conditions. At this year's Bio USA, ADEL introduced the two candidates to global pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi, shared its latest research data, and continued discussions on technology exports.
In addition, the company is growing its proprietary platform "BTS," which increases the penetration rate through the blood-brain barrier, as an independent commercialization axis. ADEL plans to pursue a business of repeatedly transferring the technology by combining BTS not only with its own pipelines such as ADEL-Y04 but also with other pharmaceutical companies' antibodies, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and gene therapies.
ADEL recently raised 49 billion won in a pre-IPO round and passed the technology evaluation required for a KOSDAQ listing. The company plans to file for a preliminary listing review at the end of July and complete its listing within the year. "After the listing, we will focus on developing ADEL-Y04, Y03, and the BTS platform," Yoon stressed. "We will build a system in which researchers autonomously develop new drugs, and produce results in our global business."
