Hankook Tire & Technology's (161390) non-pneumatic tires will be fitted on Hyundai Rotem's (064350) unmanned firefighting robots.
Hankook Tire announced on the 21st that it will supply its next-generation non-pneumatic tire "i-Flex" as original equipment tires for the unmanned firefighting robot developed by Hyundai Rotem.
The unmanned firefighting robot is based on Hyundai Rotem's multipurpose unmanned vehicle HR-Sherpa. It features a 65-millimeter high-performance water cannon, a vision-enhancing camera, a self-spraying system, and remote-control capabilities.
Hankook Tire and Hyundai Rotem developed the next-generation non-pneumatic tire optimized for high-risk fire sites through five years of joint research. The tire adopts a "double arch" structure that facilitates load support and effectively distributes compressive loads, taking into account the unmanned firefighting robot's high-load structure and rough-terrain driving environment.
The tire also secures stability through an "outer arch structure" that primarily absorbs irregular impacts transmitted from off-road surfaces, and an "inner arch structure" that mitigates vibrations transmitted to the vehicle's drive components.
Based on this stability, the unmanned firefighting robot is contributing to improved response capabilities at disaster sites where deploying firefighting personnel is difficult. It has been deployed at disaster sites including a factory fire in Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province, in January and a recent fire at an industrial complex in Daedeok District, Daejeon.
The unmanned firefighting robots equipped with Hankook Tire's "i-Flex" are currently deployed and operated with one unit each at the Metropolitan 119 Special Rescue Team and the Yeongnam 119 Special Rescue Team under the National 119 Rescue Headquarters, the Hwaseong Fire Station in Gyeonggi Province, and the South Chungcheong Fire Headquarters.
Meanwhile, Hankook Tire has been developing non-pneumatic tire technology through government research projects since 2010. The i-Flex was first unveiled at CES 2022, and later that year it demonstrated its technological competitiveness by being fitted on Hyundai Rotem's multipurpose unmanned vehicle for military operations at the Defense Industry Exhibition Korea 2022.
