Korean Air (003490) will cooperate with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI), a Thai state-run aircraft maintenance company, on military aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) work in Thailand.
Korean Air said it signed a technical agreement with TAI for comprehensive aviation MRO cooperation on the 2nd at its Tech Center in Gangseo District, Busan.
Cho Hyun-chul, head of Korean Air's military aircraft business division, and Pibun Worawanpricha, president of TAI, attended the signing ceremony along with other senior officials from both companies.
TAI is a state-run aircraft maintenance specialist in Thailand that oversees maintenance for the aircraft fleet operated by the Thai military.
Korean Air and TAI agreed to cooperate on depot-level maintenance of the UH-60 Black Hawk, the main helicopter of the Royal Thai Army. The two companies will expand the scope of cooperation to other military aircraft in the Thai military's fleet. Korean Air will also support TAI in standardizing military aircraft maintenance processes and provide technical training.
The two companies expect to contribute to strengthening the Thai military's air capabilities by combining Korean Air's global military aircraft maintenance technology with TAI's maintenance network and infrastructure in Thailand. Korean Air has also drawn up a mid- to long-term strategy to use the partnership as a springboard to enter the Southeast Asian aviation MRO market.
Korean Air has carried out depot-level maintenance and performance upgrades on more than 5,500 military aircraft over about 50 years. For the UH-60 helicopter, Korean Air's aerospace division began production in 1991 and has handled maintenance since then. It recently won a performance upgrade contract for the aircraft, recognition of its technology and expertise.
A Korean Air official said the partnership "will be an important opportunity to spread the excellence of Korean Air's K-MRO capabilities across Southeast Asia and for both companies to grow together in the Southeast Asian aviation MRO market."
