HD现代重工年内第四起工地死亡事故，劳动部高强度检查期间再添安全监管压力

A subcontractor employee working at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has died, the latest in a string of fatalities at the shipbuilder. The death came as the Ministry of Employment and Labor was conducting an intensive inspection of the company, launched in the middle of this month after a series of fatal crushing accidents. The case brings the number of deaths at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries worksites this year to four.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) said on the 31st that the worker, identified only as A, was found collapsed in a boiler machine room on the 28th and taken to a hospital, where he later died. A was employed by a partner company and worked at Hanwoori Hall, an in-house welfare complex. Opened in 1992, Hanwoori Hall houses cafeterias and sports facilities for employees and serves as the venue for major events, including shareholder meetings of HD Hyundai Mipo, formerly Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which was absorbed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries this year.
The cause of death has not been determined. But some point to the possibility of a fall or a related cause, noting that the Ulsan Eastern Branch of the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office had issued a partial work suspension order the previous day covering all A-frame ladders in use at the worksite.
"The police and the labor ministry are conducting an on-site investigation and reviewing related records," HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said. "It remains unclear whether this qualifies as a serious industrial accident under the Occupational Safety and Health Act."
Accidents large and small have continued at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries this year. On the 18th of last month, an Uzbek subcontracted worker was crushed to death while working at the company's Ulsan shipyard. On the 24th of the same month, a worker employed by a subcontractor was crushed to death on an assembly line at the panel plant of the Gunsan shipyard.
In response, the labor ministry began an intensive inspection on the 18th of this month, comparable in scope to a special inspection. It covers the Ulsan and Gunsan shipyards where the accidents occurred, the company's headquarters, and plants designated as high-risk worksites earlier this year.
