Daewoo E&C is accelerating its push into the Indonesian market, proposing to the Indonesian government an "All-in-one" convergence development model that would build small modular reactors (SMR), liquefied natural gas (LNG) power infrastructure and a gigawatt-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center all at once. Moving beyond simple plant construction, the company aims to cultivate Indonesia as a core strategic market following Vietnam, leading with a new overseas development model that combines energy, AI infrastructure and real estate development.
Daewoo E&C said on the 13th that Chairman Jung Won-ju visited Jakarta, Indonesia, from the 7th to the 11th, meeting with officials from the government, political circles, the sovereign wealth fund and local developers to discuss cooperation on future growth businesses.
During the visit, Chairman Jung met with Sugeng Suparwoto, chairman of Commission XII (Energy) of Indonesia's House of Representatives, and Todotua Pasaribu, vice minister of the Ministry of Investment and Downstream, introducing Daewoo E&C's experience in LNG plant and energy infrastructure construction and proposing a convergence development model that simultaneously builds SMR, LNG terminals and power plants, and an AI data center. According to Daewoo E&C, the Indonesian government expressed its intention to actively cooperate in advancing the related projects.
With Pandu Sjahrir, chief investment officer (CIO) of the sovereign wealth fund Danantara, he discussed ways to expand cooperation on new city development and investment development projects. The two sides shared the potential for cooperation on large-scale complex development projects and agreed to continue identifying follow-up projects.
Daewoo E&C is cultivating Indonesia, along with Vietnam, as a core overseas strategic market. Since first entering Indonesia in 1986, the company has carried out a total of seven projects worth 540 million dollars in the construction and plant sectors, including a Kraft paper mill, the District 8 mixed-use development and the Tangguh LNG expansion project.
Recently, it has been expanding its developer business, moving beyond simple contracting to directly conduct investment and development. Last year, Chairman Jung paid a courtesy call on President Prabowo Subianto, and this April, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sinar Mas Land and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND) for the development of the BSD new city.
Going forward, Daewoo E&C plans to jointly pursue energy and digital infrastructure projects linking SMR, LNG plants and an AI data center, as well as new city development, in Indonesia. Based on the urban development experience it accumulated at Starlake City in Vietnam, the company's strategy is to expand a global developer model encompassing both investment and development.
"Indonesia is a core strategic market with great growth potential," a Daewoo E&C official said. "We will participate not only in real estate development but also in building the foundation of future industries such as energy infrastructure and AI data centers, expanding a long-term basis for cooperation."
