Ebay pays couple $56mn for its role in cockroach harassment campaign
Ebay and former top executives of the company will pay $55.7mn to resolve a lawsuit alleging an elaborate harassment campaign against a couple who wrote blogs critical of the ecommerce retailer.
The couple, Ina and David Steiner, accused eBay leadership of mailing a series of threatening deliveries to the Steiners’ home in 2019, including a box of live cockroaches, a bloody pig’s head mask and a funeral wreath. The Steiners also accused executives of online harassment, including online posts inviting strangers to their house for sex.
Ebay pleaded guilty in 2023 in a criminal case over the harassment and paid a $3mn penalty. Following criminal charges in 2020, seven employees of the company were sentenced to prison terms ranging between one and five years.
The harassment campaign began after the Steiners criticised eBay in their online ecommerce blog, Ecommercebytes.
According to court documents, eBay executives grew increasingly upset by the Steiners’ critical coverage of the company in early 2019, leading then-chief executive Devin Wenig to text another executive that it was time to “crush” Ina Steiner and “take her down”.
That summer, harassment against the Steiners escalated from threatening messages to delivering items to their home, which also included a book about surviving spousal bereavement and pornographic magazines sent to neighbours’ homes in David Steiner’s name.
Ebay employees also travelled to Massachusetts to vandalise the Steiners’ home and stalk them around their hometown of Natick.
All the employees involved in the harassment were fired in September 2019, eBay said. In 2020, US prosecutors charged seven former employees of eBay with cyberstalking the Steiners.
The Steiners filed the civil suit against eBay and former employees of the company in 2021.
Under the settlement, the couple will receive $48.7mn in compensation from eBay and former employees. Ebay will also pay $6mn to charitable organisations, and Wenig will pay $1mn to a free speech charity in Ina Steiner’s name. Scalli Murphy Law, which represented the couple, announced the details of the settlement in a statement.
In a statement, eBay said the harassment “was wrong, reprehensible and should never have happened” and acknowledged the “unprofessional tone in internal communications” by executives involved.
Ebay and Scalli Murphy Law declined to comment beyond previous public statements.
