Vodafone raises guidance as refocus on core business boosts revenues
Strong first-quarter revenues prompted Vodafone to raise its full-year guidance on Monday, in its first set of results since French billionaire Xavier Niel announced he was to take a stake in the business.
Telecoms entrepreneur Niel announced earlier this month that his Vega entity was to acquire Emirati telecom group e&’s 16.2 per cent stake in Vodafone, with analysts expecting he will drive heavy cost-cutting at the FTSE 100 group in an effort to expand retail market share and boost profits.
Vodafone said it expected adjusted earnings before interest, depreciation, amortisation and leases in the higher range of its guidance of between €13bn and €13.3bn, while free cash flow would also be at the higher end of its €2.6bn to €2.9bn guidance, largely because of strong growth in its African operations.
Vodafone reported adjusted earnings of €2.9bn in the first quarter of 2027, up 6.2 per cent on the year before, buoyed by revenue growth of nearly 10 per cent across the entire group to €10.3bn. Shares rose about 4.5 per cent in morning trading.
The company has undergone a radical reshaping in recent years under its chief executive Margherita Della Valle, who has sold struggling operations and refocused on core markets including Germany and the UK.
Della Valle sold the company’s Spanish and Italian units in 2024 and 2025 respectively and announced that Vodafone would sell its 50 per cent stake in its Dutch operation earlier this year. Under her watch, Vodafone also acquired CK Hutchison’s Three in a landmark deal that consolidated the UK’s mobile market from four to three operators.
Yet, Della Valle is likely to come under pressure from Niel — whose discount mobile and broadband provider Iliad upended the French market — should his stake acquisition be cleared by regulators.
The French billionaire believes Vodafone can still do more to use its well-known brand and global reach, which extends to more than 20 countries, and could push Della Valle to explore further acquisitions.
