Lucid brings in turnaround advisers as EV sales slump
Lucid has brought in consultants to help revive the struggling Saudi-owned electric-car maker but denied reports that the advisers had “recommended bankruptcy”, which had sent its stock down by more than half.
The California-based carmaker’s stock plunged as much as 56 per cent on Tuesday after reports that the consultants AlixPartners was weighing whether Lucid should file for bankruptcy or be taken private.
But the stock recovered to close down 16 per cent after the company said the “rumours are completely false” and that “the company has sufficient liquidity to carry its operations well into next year”.
AlixPartners, which is known for advising on Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganisation of General Motors in 2009, is working with Lucid on “improving execution, strengthening operations, and positioning Lucid to realize the full potential of its technology, products, and innovation”, the carmaker added.
Lucid has faced a sharp decline in EV demand in the US exacerbated by the Trump administration’s cancellation of EV credits and reversal of climate policies.
Lucid posted net losses of $2.7bn in both 2024 and 2025. Its stock had fallen 48 per cent this year before Tuesday’s volatile trading.
Saudi’s Public Investment Fund was an anchor investor in the special purpose acquisition company deal that took Lucid public, with Lucid receiving more than $8.5bn in investment and credit lines from the PIF since its listing in 2021.
Lucid operates two plants in Arizona and in 2023 opened Saudi Arabia’s first car manufacturing facility as part of the kingdom’s “Saudi Vision 2030” economic diversification drive.
The group raised $1.1bn in capital in mid-April, including an additional $200mn equity investment from Uber, which has agreed to buy at least 35,000 of its cars for the robotaxi service and became Lucid’s second-biggest shareholder.
Lucid is losing hundreds of thousands of dollars per car sold and its adjusted free cash flow was -$1.4bn in the quarter to the end of March. BNP Paribas analysts estimated in May that Lucid needed to raise about $2bn in outside capital over the next 12 months and $4bn by 2030.
The company delivered 3,953 vehicles during the second quarter, 19 per cent higher than a year earlier but still well below analyst forecasts of 4,600 units, indicating disappointing demand for its Gravity SUV despite releasing a more affordable version with a starting price of $79,900.
Last month, it announced it was laying off 18 per cent of its workforce, its second large round of lay-offs this year following a 12 per cent cut in February.
Lucid recently appointed Silvio Napoli, former boss of Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler, as its new chief executive and also replaced its chief financial officer.
AlixPartners did not respond to requests for comment.
