Directors’ Deals: M&S directors cash out as shares climb
More than a year after Marks and Spencer’s cyber incident rocked operations and depressed shares in the retailer, the company appears to have found the light at the end of the tunnel.
While the fallout was visible in the group’s final results in May, with pre-tax profit down 29 per cent year-on-year for the 12 months to March 28, a strong showing from M&S’s food business helped lift sentiment after sales rose 7 per cent.
As a result, the group defined it as a “year of two halves”, with significant disruption during the first six months followed by “a return to sales and profit growth in the second”.
And it seems the market agrees: although M&S notably declined to provide forward guidance for the current financial year, the shares enjoyed a post-results bounce. A further boost came after broker Jefferies raised its target price to 460p per share at the end of July. All told, the shares have climbed 17.4 per cent since January.
That might explain the recent bout of selling from a trio of executives. Alex Freudmann, managing director of M&S’s food unit, sold a stake worth £1.07mn last week, while Mark Lemming, managing director of M&S’s international business, discharged £313,940 worth of stock. Operations director Sacha Berendji also sold shares worth £1.19mn, ahead of his retirement from M&S in April.
Profit-taking makes sense when the shares are riding high, but calling the top can be a tricky task. Whether now is truly the most opportune time to cash out remains to be seen. According to FactSet, over two-fifths of brokers have the company on a “buy” rating, which implies there could be money left on the table.
