EasyJet profits tumble as Middle East war hits consumer confidence
EasyJet, the low-cost carrier that has backed a £5.7bn takeover bid, said profits had tumbled by more than two-thirds as the war in the Middle East increased costs and hit consumer confidence.
The Luton-headquartered airline said on Thursday that headline profits before tax for the three months to June were £85mn, down from £286mn in the same period last year. But it said there was strong demand for bookings heading into the peak summer travel period.
EasyJet shares fell as much as 14 per cent on Wednesday as reports about a looming EU review of airline ownership rules cast doubt over its planned takeover. The carrier’s board this month recommended a £5.7bn offer from Apollo that trumped a £5.5bn bid from US private credit group Castlelake.
EasyJet reported a rebound in consumer confidence and had sold 68 per cent of its airline capacity for the three months to September, its fourth quarter.
Chief executive Kenton Jarvis said passengers were now beginning to make bookings further in advance, as “customers continue to prioritise travel and take advantage of our great fares”.
Rival low-cost carrier Ryanair reported a similar hit from the war in the Middle East on Monday. The Dublin-based airline’s profit after tax for the three months to June was €538mn, down 34 per cent on the same period in 2025 and below analysts’ expectations of €579mn.
