Samsung Biologics buys Swiss peptide maker for $1.8bn
Samsung Biologics will buy Switzerland’s PolyPeptide Group for about $1.8bn to expand its manufacturing capabilities amid soaring demand for peptide-based medicines.
The South Korean biotech company will pay SFr44.30 ($54.90) a share in cash, representing a 6.1 per cent premium to PolyPeptide’s closing price on Friday. The offer is about 40 per cent higher than its share price before takeover speculation emerged.
Samsung Biologics shares fell as much as 3.3 per cent in Seoul on Monday following the announcement.
The deal is the latest example of South Korean companies expanding overseas through acquisitions, with outbound mergers and acquisitions up 45 per cent to $11.6bn in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2025, according to Dealogic.
The acquisition will be the largest M&A deal in South Korea’s biopharmaceutical sector, Samsung said.
PolyPeptide chair Peter Wilden called it a “compelling” offer that represented a “transformational opportunity to accelerate our strategic ambitions at a scale we could not reach alone”.
Peptide-based therapeutics have emerged as one of the fastest-growing areas in biopharmaceuticals, driven by rising demand for weight-loss treatments such as Wegovy and other GLP-1 drugs.
PolyPeptide has plants in European countries including Sweden, Belgium and France as well as the US and India.
The acquisition will expand Samsung’s contract development and manufacturing business by adding peptide production capacity.
Morgan Stanley analyst Mi Hyun Kim said the acquisition supports Samsung’s expansion beyond its traditional antibody-focused contract development and manufacturing operations amid rising demand for GLP-1 treatments.
The deal is expected to close by the end of this year, subject to regulatory approvals and closing conditions. PolyPeptide’s board has unanimously recommended the offer.
After completion, Samsung plans to delist PolyPeptide from the Swiss stock exchange to make it a wholly owned subsidiary.
The largest shareholder, Draupnir Holdings, which owns a 55.6 per cent stake, has backed the acquisition and will tender all its shares.
