Magnum boosted by heatwave as ice cream sales surge in Europe
The Magnum Ice Cream Company reported soaring sales as consumers flocked to buy ice cream during the heatwaves gripping large parts of Europe.
The company, which was spun out of Unilever last year, reported sales of €2.9bn in the second quarter, up 4.9 per cent on an organic basis, compared with a year earlier. The maker of Ben & Jerry’s and Cornetto expanded its distribution to take advantage of rising temperatures.
“Our key summer selling season got off to a strong start,” said Magnum’s chief executive, Peter ter Kulve.
The sales increase gives a timely boost to the newly formed company, which has been affected by investor concerns over the impact of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs on demand for sweet treats.
Magnum is also the subject of ongoing takeover interest from private-equity firms that circled the business before it was spun off, according to people familiar with the matter.
The company was demerged from FTSE 100 consumer giant Unilever last December, listing on Euronext Amsterdam with a valuation of €7.8bn. Investors have watched its performance closely to see how it fares as a standalone entity. Other businesses carved out of Unilever, such as its tea and spreads divisions, have struggled to achieve strong growth.
Sales volumes in Europe rose 5 per cent in the second quarter, helped by Magnum’s decision to reduce prices by 0.8 per cent on average. Meanwhile, volumes were broadly flat in the Americas and Asia, the Middle East and Africa, regions in which the company raised prices.
Sales of Ben & Jerry’s climbed 9.2 per cent in the second quarter after the company branched out from the traditional tubs into new formats including ice cream sandwiches.
Magnum’s shares were little changed on Thursday after rising 44 per cent since the end of April.
The company is seeking to counter investor fears over the widespread take-up of appetite-suppressing weight-loss drugs. Magnum has developed ice creams designed to appeal to dieters such as bite-sized products like Magnum bonbons and low-calorie, high-protein options including Yasso frozen yoghurt.
