GSK to shut historic Stevenage hub as it announces £1.9bn cost-saving drive
GSK plans to shut its historic research and development hub in Stevenage, as one of the UK’s largest drugmakers bets that shifting to a new site in Cambridge will help bolster its pipelines of new medicines.
The company said on Tuesday that it would move most of its R&D activity to a new site on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the largest research centres in Europe.
The move comes as chief executive Luke Miels ramps up GSK’s pipeline of new drugs by launching 20 phase 3 trials, the final stage of clinical testing before drugs are submitted for regulatory approval.
Miels is tasked with reviving GSK’s fortunes after years of lagging behind its global rivals, and reaching an ambitious revenue target of £40bn in annual revenues by 2031. His challenges include handling the forthcoming expiration of exclusivity on some of the group’s most profitable medicines.
The company also announced a cost-saving drive to fund the new pipeline, with a goal of saving £1.9bn annually by 2029 via job cuts in areas such as support services.
