Glencore explores secondary listing in Australia
London-listed Glencore is planning to seek a secondary listing in Australia, in a sign of how the UK’s reputation as a capital markets hub for mining companies is coming under threat.
The Anglo-Swiss company, which is among the largest companies on the FTSE 100 with a market cap of about $85bn, has long complained that its shares in London are undervalued and has been reviewing other potential listing locations, including New York and Sydney.
Chief executive Gary Nagle said the listing would “broaden our investor base and enhance trading liquidity”. The company is targeting admission to the ASX in October.
Glencore’s earnings soared 86 per cent during the first half of this year, fuelled by outsized trading profits from oil price swings due to the war in the Middle East.
Adjusted earnings rose to $10.1bn, the second highest level ever, buoyed by high commodity prices and volatility in energy markets.
