BP to sell US biogas business as profits soar
BP has posted its highest quarterly profit since 2022, crediting higher prices for oil and gas and refined fuels during the Iran conflict.
The company’s underlying profit in the second quarter rose 144 per cent year on year to $5.7bn, ahead of analysts’ estimates of $5.1bn.
The UK oil major also said it would sell its US biogas business Archaea, bought for $4.1bn in 2022. Last week it announced the sale of its business in the UK North Sea.
Chief executive Meg O’Neill said several players had already made unsolicited approaches for the North Sea assets.
“I have had a conversation with the prime minister and the message I left him with is the UK gets 75 per cent of its energy from fossil fuels, the first barrel we consume should be coming from the North Sea,” she told CNBC, referring to the new UK leader Andy Burnham.
Earlier, Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company by production, said it had made $33.4bn of adjusted profit in the second quarter, a 33 per cent year-on-year rise, after higher prices for its crude and refined fuels.
