WASHINGTON—The Qatari-gifted luxury jet that President Trump is using as Air Force One will get an upgrade this fall, according to the White House, putting the plane out of commission for roughly a month.

In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the new plane is “perfectly safe for the President’s travels.” But she said it would “receive additional upgrades and enhancements” this fall that will take about a month to complete. She didn’t elaborate on what the upgrades would entail. The president will fly an older version of Air Force One while the new plane is being upgraded, Leavitt said.

The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the president left Turkey, where he was attending an international summit earlier this month, on an older Air Force One plane in part because of concerns over the jet’s defensive capabilities. The change in plans occurred after U.S. officials received Israeli intelligence about a possible plot to kill Trump. The president’s proximity to Iran as hostilities were resuming was also a factor, the Journal reported at the time.

Asked by a reporter on Sunday about the plane’s lacking defensive capabilities, Trump replied: “It has a lot of capability, but as I understand it, in about a month or so, they’re going to send it to have it be maxed out.” It appeared to be the first time Trump publicly acknowledged the plane would need to be upgraded.

The Qatari government gifted the U.S. the Boeing 747 last year after Trump complained that the planes he was required to fly on as president were too old and small.

Ownership of the plane was transferred to the Air Force in the spring of 2025 and it was flown to an L3Harris Technologies facility in Texas in May 2025. The jet was swept for threats and went through a $400 million overhaul that included state-of-the-art security and technology for the president, such as a new communications system. Other upgrades included the installation of self-deploying air stairs.

Trump took his maiden flight on the plane on July 1.

Air Force officials have stressed the security of the Qatari-gifted plane. The new plane went through much quicker modifications than two next-generation Air Force One planes that Boeing began working on seven years ago. Unlike the Qatari plane, which had most of its interior left intact, the two next-gen planes have been completely gutted and had major structural modifications to allow for larger cargo doors and a fully customized interior.

While the plane has royal comforts, such as oversize leather seats that turn into beds, Air Force officials have acknowledged the plane doesn’t have all the features of its predecessors.

For instance, the plane doesn’t have enough refrigerators to store large quantities of food, meaning the president’s meals would need to be transported on different aircraft on long trips. The Air Force has used one of the older Air Force Ones to fly as a backup during recent trips, including when Trump went to the summit in Turkey earlier this month.

The Trump administration recently subpoenaed New York Times reporters who wrote about security concerns involving the jet. The subpoenas occurred after Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel met with White House officials to discuss the bureau’s investigation into leaked details about the plane.
