不做 Chevron Corporation(雪佛龙)(CVX.US)

Three feet that changed how energy moves
3 min read | October 12, 2026
Meet the energy innovators who turned a limitation into increased energy capacity.
For years, Jon Farkas, a Chevron facility engineer, and his colleagues watched ships arrive at the Empire Terminal through the Mississippi River Southwest Pass. The terminal connects offshore production with refineries, pipelines, storage systems and transportation, making it an important link in the movement of oil through the Gulf Coast and beyond.
The route to the terminal offered 53 feet of water. The terminal berth where those ships docked to load crude offered 50. That three-foot difference limited how much cargo ships could take out of the terminal. That’s because the heavier a ship is, the deeper it sinks in the water. Large ships would have to leave the terminal with less crude than they could carry at full capacity.
Employees had learned to work around the difference. But Farkas and Jacob Behm, a Chevron crude trader, wondered whether there was a better solution.
Their question led to a project that deepened the berth from 50 feet to 53 feet, a change expected to unlock an additional 522,000 barrels per month of throughput.
A practical solution
The team worked with colleagues across infrastructure, planning, commercial and marine operations to evaluate whether the berth could be deepened while maintaining Chevron Marine Assurance requirements.

After studying the proposal, the team chose to deepen the berth in stages, increasing its depth from 50 feet to 53 feet. Three feet may not sound significant. At Empire, it removed a constraint that had limited how certain qualifying vessels could berth at the terminal.
How three feet changed the Empire Terminal
Originally, the route to the terminal offered 53 feet, while the terminal berth offered only 50 feet.
The Empire Terminal berth was deepened to 53 feet.
The change is expected to unlock an additional 522,000 barrels per month of throughput.
An impact beyond one berth
The Empire Terminal is one link in a much larger chain. The terminal connects offshore production, marine transportation and Chevron’s Pascagoula Refinery. Crude oil passes through several facilities and transportation systems before reaching a refinery or market. When one connection becomes more efficient, all the parts of the network can work better.
For Chevron, the project shows how focused improvements can create more value from existing assets. It also gives the company more options for moving crude to other markets around the world.
“Executing the project took an iterative effort with the terminal operations team, the Empire scheduler and trader, and the service provider to find windows where weather and river levels allowed the work to occur without impacting Chevron’s ability to deliver crude to the customers,” said Farkas.
