British luxury carmaker Bentley Motors will launch the Torqal in September, its first electric vehicle and fourth model line. Bentley has been releasing teaser details of the Torqal, positioned as an urban luxury sport utility vehicle, to build anticipation.
The name Torqal comes from El Torcal de Antequera, a natural landscape in Andalusia, Spain. Bentley said the sense of awe evoked by its striking rock formations and maze-like scenery inspired the model name.
In teasers released ahead of the vehicle's unveiling, Bentley introduced a range of luxury elements reinterpreted for the modern era. The diamond pattern, a core Bentley design element since the 1920s, carries over into the Torqal's floating diamond grille. The latest digital displays also feature diamond graphics rendered from real crystal, produced in collaboration with British crystal maker Cumbria Crystal.
Bentley has also combined the latest technology with tradition in sound. As Bentley's first all-electric car, the Torqal has no combustion engine note. But the company has created a new form of the immersive sound that has defined the brand's identity for more than a century.
Bentley's development team compared engine sound with drum performance and found that combustion engine sound is not perfectly uniform. The team decided to create human character and emotional resonance through natural variation, producing a new sound identity called Bentley Dynamic Symphony from recordings of real instruments.
Bentley has also broken new ground in interior materials. Working with British premium fabric maker Fox Brothers, the company applied 100% merino wool fabric in a vehicle for the first time. Soft to the touch and elegant, with durability suited to automotive interiors, the merino wool fabric adds a new level of comfort. The interior also features ombre veneer, made by precisely pressing wood and sustainable materials to produce naturally shifting color tones.
