Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of evaporative dry eye, affecting millions of patients and significantly impacting visual quality, ocular comfort, and daily activities. The updated FDA label recognizes TearCare's ability to restore gland function, shifting treatment focus from symptom management to addressing the underlying disease mechanism.
The TearCare System uses thermal-activated gland expression therapy in combination with manual gland expression to improve meibomian gland performance. CEO Paul Badawi described the label expansion as a "landmark moment" for the dry eye category, emphasizing that for the first time providers and patients have a therapy specifically indicated to improve gland function.
Neel R. Desai, M.D., Director of Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at The Eye Institute of West Florida, noted that the recognition of TearCare's functional improvement represents an important evolution in dry eye care, validating a shift toward interventions designed to restore physiological function rather than simply manage disease consequences.
