Samsung SDS' newly formed labor union has rapidly expanded its membership, achieving majority union status just two days after its launch.
According to THE ELEC's reporting on July 7, membership in the Samsung SDS union—the Samsung SDS branch of the Samsung Group Cross-Enterprise Union—surpassed 5,500 as of that afternoon. With the company employing approximately 11,000 people, the union has secured majority status.
A majority union is recognized as the representative of the overall workforce during collective bargaining, giving it substantial negotiating authority and influence. Earlier that morning, the Samsung SDS union formally requested collective bargaining with the company by submitting letters of bargaining authorization.
The Samsung SDS union held its inaugural general meeting on July 5 and officially began operations on July 6. Kwon Oh-kyung, head of the Samsung SDS branch, opposed the company's new human resources system—including revisions to its performance incentive (PI) program—and declared, "The union must quickly secure majority membership so that it can prevent unilateral decisions by the company and create a genuine channel for communication."
The union's rapid expansion is widely seen as being driven by growing employee dissatisfaction with the new HR system currently under a company-wide vote, particularly the inclusion of the company's share price and external performance indicators in the calculation of performance bonuses.
The company has defended the changes, arguing that the revised system would improve compensation by setting the incentive pool at 20% of employees' annual salaries while also addressing legal risks. However, the two sides have yet to narrow their differences.
The employee vote on the new HR system was originally scheduled to conclude on June 29, but was extended by about one week and will remain open until midnight on July 7.
