Hyundai Motor Group said on the 2nd that it has donated nano cooling film — an advanced material that lowers a vehicle's interior temperature simply by being attached to windows — for use on two police buses operated by the 1st Mobile Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Mobile Operations Bureau.
The film reflects solar heat like conventional tinting film while also radiating infrared heat from inside the vehicle to the outside. Hyundai Motor (005380) Group says it is the first company in the world to develop the material. The film consists of three layers in total, including two that reflect near-infrared wavelengths from solar energy and one that sends mid-infrared wavelengths from inside the vehicle out.
Hyundai Motor Group decided to donate the film after taking into account that police mobile unit officers use the buses for long stretches as both an office and a place to eat and sleep. It also noted that police buses are especially vulnerable to extreme heat because regulations make heavy tinting difficult.
The group expects the film to improve officers' working conditions and to save energy by reducing excessive air conditioning use. It plans to verify the cooling effect and quality through a year of follow-up monitoring before considering full-scale mass production.
"I find it rewarding that we developed a technology that can offer at least some help to police officers struggling in extreme heat," said Lee Min-jae, a principal research engineer at the Advanced Materials Research Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia, who led research and development on the film. "We will keep expanding the number of cases where it is applied to actual vehicles and monitor the results to raise the technology's level of completion."
