LG Energy Solution returned to profitability in the second quarter, posting an operating profit of 113.3 billion won after three consecutive quarters of losses. Despite sluggish electric vehicle (EV) demand, growing energy storage system (ESS) demand and strong cylindrical battery sales supported earnings.
The company announced on July 7 preliminary second-quarter results of 7.5602 trillion won in revenue and 113.3 billion won in operating profit. Compared with the same period last year, revenue increased 24.8%, while operating profit declined 77%. Compared with the previous quarter, revenue rose 15.3%, and the company returned to profitability. Operating profit came in slightly below market expectations of around 180 billion won.
Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC) benefits under the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) totaled 241 billion won during the quarter. Excluding the tax credit, revenue would have been 7.3193 trillion won, while the company would have posted an operating loss of 127.7 billion won.
The outlook remains positive. ESS sales, particularly in North America, continue to strengthen, while EV sales by Tesla, LG Energy Solution's largest customer, remain solid. According to market research firm SNE Research, Tesla sold a cumulative 601,000 EVs through May this year, up 9.9% from a year earlier. Its global market share also increased to 7.7% from 7.3% over the same period.
A key objective for this year is to restore annual revenue above 30 trillion won. On a basis excluding AMPC benefits, quarterly revenue exceeded 7 trillion won for the first time in 10 quarters since the fourth quarter of 2023, signaling improving business fundamentals. If the company achieves annual revenue of more than 30 trillion won, it would mark the first time in three years since 2023.
