Kia (000270.KS) reclaimed the top spot in Korea's domestic auto market last month for the first time in three months.
Kia's July domestic sales jumped 21.3% year-on-year to 54,508 units, according to Hyundai Motor Group on the 3rd. Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) sales fell 14.4% over the same period to 48,113 units.
It marks the first time in three months that Hyundai has trailed Kia in the domestic market. Kia had earlier surpassed Hyundai in April sales for the first time in 28 years. Hyundai regained the lead shortly afterward but was overtaken again last month.
For Hyundai, weak sales of its flagship Santa Fe model proved painful. Domestic sales of the Santa Fe totaled 3,822 units in July, down 10.1% year-on-year. Sales of volume models Tucson (-65.7%) and Palisade (-59.2%) also fell sharply.
