Hanwha Group, which oversees Korea's largest solar company, has been at the forefront of creating environmentally friendly educational conditions for future generations, installing solar power facilities on elementary school rooftops since 2022.
The initiative, named the "Clean School Project," is a community win-win model in which solar panels and other equipment manufactured by Hanwha Solutions' Qcells division are installed free of charge at elementary schools through top partner companies, with the company also handling follow-up management. SPV, a strong small enterprise that has walked a single path in solar engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for 20 years, handles the practical work alongside Hanwha.
The Clean School Project took over the "Happy Sunshine Campaign," which supported 2,187 kilowatts (kW) of solar power facilities at 320 social welfare facilities nationwide over 10 years starting in 2011, and expanded its stage to elementary schools across the country. It has long been cited as an exemplary case of win-win management, as it not only responds to the government's stance on a major renewable energy transition but can also be expected to deliver multiple positive impacts, including supplying work to partner companies, reducing electricity bills through self-generation, and providing eco-friendly and energy-saving education. Up to 100 million won in project costs is invested per school. Hanwha Group recognizes this as an investment in the future and bears all costs.
Selected schools receive facilities to improve classroom air quality, including solar power equipment, window-type ventilation systems, air showers, air mats, air purifiers and wall greening, provided selectively in consideration of on-site conditions. On a cumulative basis from 2022 to 2026, 27 schools, 725 classes and 16,588 students are enjoying the benefits.
The solar power facility capacity installed at clean schools amounts to 182 kW, and the eco-friendly energy produced annually reaches 240,000 kWh. Through this, greenhouse gas reduction effects of 110 tCO₂-eq (tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) are achieved each year, equivalent to planting 47,000 pine trees.
Creating clean schools also helps improve air quality inside schools. At Guksan Elementary School in Geoje, selected in 2023, carbon dioxide concentration was 1,294 ppm before the window-type ventilation system was operated but decreased by up to 66% to 441 ppm after operation, according to measurement results.
Last year, support for "Clean Rest Spots," eco-friendly rest spaces, was added. Idle classrooms in schools resulting from declining student numbers were transformed into eco-friendly rest spaces where students can relax comfortably, using window-type ventilation systems, wall greening and eco-friendly materials. As a result, fine dust (PM 10) decreased by 85% and ultra-fine dust (PM 2.5 or less) decreased by 41%.
