The KOSPI jumped more than 4% in early trade and was moving around the 6,700 mark, clawing back part of the previous day's steep drop. A decline in long-term U.S. Treasury yields, driven by an expanded bond buyback by the U.S. Treasury, and SK hynix's (000660.KS) announcement of a large-scale share buyback and cancellation lifted investor sentiment.
The KOSPI opened at 6,680.34, up 209.17 points, or 3.23%, from the previous session, according to the Korea Exchange on the 20th. It quickly widened its gains after the open, moving above the 6,700 level. Retail investors led the buying. As of 9:29 a.m., individuals had net-bought 250.8 billion won ($174 million), while foreign and institutional investors net-sold 87 billion won and 262.4 billion won, respectively.
A steadying of long-term U.S. Treasury yields overnight fueled the domestic market's advance. The U.S. Treasury announced on the 19th, local time, that it would expand its long-term bond buybacks to at least $4 billion per operation from $2 billion, easing the pressure from rising rates that had recently weighed on the market. The yield on the 30-year U.S. Treasury note, which had climbed above 5.33% the previous day to its highest level since 2007, fell back into the 5.1% range, while the 10-year yield dropped below 4.7%.
SK hynix's large shareholder-return plan also drove the index higher. After the company said the previous day that it would buy back and fully cancel 40 trillion won ($27.8 billion) worth of its own shares, SK hynix shares were up 7% to 8% in early trade. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) was up 4% to 5%, and SK Square (402340.KS) gained more than 5% amid strength in chip stocks.
The KOSDAQ also extended its gains, though its advance narrowed from just after the open. The KOSDAQ index started at 843.99, up 19.53 points, or 2.37%, from the prior session, and rose as high as 850.77 during the session before giving back gains to trade in the high 1% range. Buying flowed into domestic biotech stocks after positive Phase 3 trial results for an mRNA-based cancer treatment being jointly developed by U.S. drugmakers Moderna and Merck, but continued selling by foreign investors trimmed the index's gains from earlier in the session.
