Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced on July 8 that it successfully launched the CAS500-4 (Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4), with the satellite scheduled to begin its operational mission in the first half of 2027 following an initial in-orbit commissioning phase.
The satellite was launched at 12:12 a.m. (local time) on July 7 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, United States. It successfully established communication with the Svalbard Ground Station in Norway at 3:05 a.m.
CAS500-4 is South Korea's first Earth observation satellite dedicated to agriculture and forestry. It can image the entire Korean Peninsula in just three passes, significantly reducing observation cycles.
The satellite is equipped to capture wide-area imagery with a 120-kilometer swath width and 5-meter spatial resolution. The data will be used for public-sector applications including crop growth and yield analysis, greenhouse gas estimation, and forest resource monitoring. It will also support disaster response efforts such as detecting wildfires and forest damage.
KAI operates a one-stop satellite development system at its Space Center in Sacheon, where it can design, manufacture, and conduct environmental testing for both 4-ton-class large satellites and up to 20 microsatellites simultaneously.
Kim Jong-chul, Chief Executive Officer of KAI, said, "Building on the successful development and launch of the satellite, we will expand our satellite exports and space services business, contributing to South Korea's goal of becoming a leading space economy."
