Chung Mong-joon, chairman of the Asan Foundation, will gift about 3.5% of HD Hyundai (267250.KS) shares to his eldest son, HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun. As a result, Chairman Chung's stake in HD Hyundai will rise to about 9%, further strengthening his control within the group.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system on the 4th, Chairman Chung Mong-joon disclosed through a "Report on Planned Transactions of Specific Securities by Executives and Major Shareholders" that he will gift 2.8 million common shares of HD Hyundai to Chairman Chung Ki-sun. The scheduled date for the share gift is the 3rd of next month.
Based on HD Hyundai's closing price on the 4th of 208,500 won, the value of the gifted shares is about 583.8 billion won. Chairman Chung Ki-sun currently holds a 6.12% stake in HD Hyundai, and if he secures an additional 2.8 million shares through this gift, his stake is expected to rise to 9.67%.
Meanwhile, the HD Hyundai stake held by Chairman Chung Mong-joon will decrease from the current 26.6% to 23.05% once the gift is completed. However, he will retain his position as HD Hyundai's largest shareholder even afterward.
The share gift is seen as part of HD Hyundai Group's succession process. When Chairman Chung Ki-sun was promoted to group chairman in October last year, HD Hyundai concluded its professional management system that had continued for 37 years since 1988 and began its "third-generation owner management system" in earnest.
