Samsung Heavy Industries has joined hands with Seoul National University's College of Engineering to pursue medium- and long-term research and development and talent training for the shipbuilding and offshore industry.
Samsung Heavy Industries (010140) said on the 3rd that it signed an agreement on the 2nd at Seoul National University's Gwanak campus to establish the Global Cooperation Research Center for Future Ship Technology. Choi Sung-ahn, vice chairman and chief executive of Samsung Heavy Industries, and Kim Young-oh, dean of the university's College of Engineering, attended the signing ceremony.
The center, launched to mark the 11th year of industry-academia cooperation between the company and the university, aims to conduct medium- and long-term convergence research with global partners on shipbuilding technology and to train researchers. The main areas of cooperation are the convergence of energy technology with all fields of shipbuilding and offshore engineering, global networking and research collaboration, and the training of top global researchers through industry-academia education programs.
Samsung Heavy Industries has been expanding industry-academia cooperation with domestic universities to strengthen the competitiveness of the shipbuilding and offshore industry. Last month, it opened a Next-Generation Ship Research Center with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
The two centers are designed to complement each other. The KAIST center focuses on process automation based on physical artificial intelligence and robotics, which determine manufacturing productivity, while the Seoul National University center combines core shipbuilding and offshore technologies with energy technology, concentrating on medium- and long-term projects in eco-friendly, or decarbonized, and next-generation fuel technologies and on securing an early lead in future markets.
"Seoul National University's outstanding research capabilities and talent have contributed greatly not only to the growth of Samsung Heavy Industries but also to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea's shipbuilding and offshore industry," Choi said. "We will continue this cooperation and establish it as a successful model of industry-academia collaboration."
