Hanwha Systems (272210.KS) posted sharp increases in second-quarter revenue, operating profit, and net profit as demand grows for cost-effective Korean weapons systems in the global defense market.
Hanwha Systems reported second-quarter revenue of 1.1176 trillion won and operating profit of 103.7 billion won on a consolidated basis, the company said in a regulatory filing on the 28th. Revenue rose 45% from the same period a year earlier, while operating profit surged 219%. The results marked an "earnings surprise," far exceeding the consensus estimate of major domestic securities firms, which had projected revenue of 952.7 billion won and operating profit of 57.9 billion won. Second-quarter net profit also reached 52.7 billion won, up 14% year-on-year.
The strong results were largely driven by major domestic and overseas defense projects. These included sights and fire control systems for Poland's K2 tanks, large-scale export projects such as the multifunction radar (MFR) for Cheongung-II in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, the combat management system (CMS) for the next-generation Ulsan-class Batch-III frigates (FFX Batch-III), the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and avionics for the Korean fighter jet (KF-21), and the fourth production run of sights and fire control systems for domestic K2 tanks.
The information and communications technology (ICT) division also served as a solid support for earnings, handling affiliate contracts including Hanwha Life Insurance's next-generation system, the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for Hanwha Philly Shipyard, and the construction of a smart plant for Hanwha Aerospace.
Hanwha Systems' order backlog totaled 11.2959 trillion won as of the end of the second quarter.
Hanwha Systems plans to sustain its growth momentum in the second half of the year by expanding its export portfolio and continuing to win major project orders. "Stable revenue from large-scale export projects and key domestic production projects drove the earnings improvement," a Hanwha Systems official said. "We will build a firm foundation for sustainable growth by pioneering overseas markets and strengthening our core technology capabilities."
