Intel Foundry has announced a strategic collaboration with cybersecurity company Fortinet to co-develop the next-generation Fortinet Security Processor 6 (SP6), expanding Intel's external foundry business and marking the first publicly announced customer for its Intel 4 process technology.
Under the agreement, Intel and Fortinet will design SP6 using Intel 4, a 4-nanometer-class process technology that precedes Intel's current flagship processes—the 1.4-nanometer-class 14A and the 1.8-nanometer-class 18A. The design will also incorporate Intel's Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB), a 2.5D advanced packaging technology. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
"We're moving quickly with Fortinet to advance critical security technologies," Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said in a statement.
Fortinet, a US-based security software company, also operates an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) business that designs chips tailored to customer needs. "By leveraging Intel's technology and supply chain, we will accelerate Fortinet's ASIC strategy," said Ken Xie, chief executive officer of Fortinet.
Fortinet is reportedly the first external foundry customer Intel has publicly disclosed since Lip-Bu Tan became CEO in 2024. Intel Foundry is said to derive a high proportion of its business from internal sales. An Intel representative said, "External customers, including the US government, do exist—they simply haven't been disclosed."
