Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has established an integrated system that allows it to handle the entire satellite development process in-house, from design and manufacturing to assembly and environmental testing.
KAI said Oct. 12 that it held a ceremony marking the completion of its satellite environmental testing facilities at its space center at its headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province. KAI President Kim Jong-chool and other company employees attended the event.
Construction of the electromagnetic and acoustic chambers was completed in August. The electromagnetic chamber is used to verify electromagnetic interference between satellite equipment, while the acoustic chamber recreates the intense noise generated during launch to assess structural integrity.
KAI's space center can manufacture six medium- to large-sized satellites and more than 20 microsatellites simultaneously. Its annual production capacity for microsatellites exceeds 100 units. With the addition of the electromagnetic and acoustic chambers to a 4-ton thermal vacuum chamber completed in 2024, the company has secured key environmental testing facilities for satellite development.
KAI also makes its testing facilities available to South Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Since 2022, about 20 domestic companies have conducted more than 100 environmental tests at KAI's facilities.
"We have established a system to independently handle every stage of satellite development," a KAI official said. "We will expand our presence in the global space market by leveraging our accumulated technology and infrastructure."
