LG Energy Solution will supply batteries for Google's solar and energy storage system (ESS) project.
Google and independent power producer (IPP) Cypress Creek Energy (CCE) unveiled the Steel River Energy Center project on July 14, local time. LG Energy Solution's batteries will be deployed for the project.
With electricity demand surging due to the rapid expansion of data centers, Google and CCE are developing a solar photovoltaic (PV)-linked ESS project. The partners plan to deploy an initial 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery storage for commercial operation in 2029 before expanding capacity to 2.9 GWh. Google has agreed to purchase the project's entire initial power output.
According to BloombergNEF (BNEF), Google's electricity consumption increased 37% in 2025, while Microsoft's rose 24%. Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft accounted for 49% of all corporate renewable energy purchase agreements worldwide in 2025.
The latest project follows LG Energy Solution's data center-related energy infrastructure project with DTE Energy announced in May, marking another contract with a major technology company. The company will supply its North America-produced lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based ESS solution, JF2 DC Link.
LG Energy Solution currently manufactures ESS batteries at four production sites: its Holland plant in Michigan, L-H Battery Company in Ohio, Ultium Cells in Tennessee, and NextStar Energy in Canada. Its Lansing, Michigan plant is also scheduled to begin operations later this year. By the end of this year, the company's global ESS production capacity is expected to exceed 60 GWh, with more than 50 GWh located in North America. As of 2025, its cumulative ESS order backlog totaled 140 GWh.
