Nike is staging an exhibition spanning fashion, art and sneaker culture to coincide with Seoul Art Week.
Nike said on the 5th that it is holding Nikelab Seoul 2026 in Seoul's Jongno district from that day through the 6th. Launched in 2023, Nikelab Seoul is a cultural platform that has collaborated each year with a range of artists and creators, timed to Seoul Art Week, when major art events such as Frieze Seoul and Kiaf take place.
This year's edition centers on a collaborative exhibition with New York-based designer Melitta Baumeister and a second show, "ABOUT THE 1," featuring 30 Korean artists. Both focus on how different creators interpret Nike's products and brand icons in their own ways. Baumeister, who has built a distinctive sculptural language by working across the boundary between fashion and sculpture, is taking part in her second collaboration with Nike after reinterpreting the company's Vomero Premium and Pegasus Premium in April. The exhibition offers an early look at a collaborative collection set for release this winter.
The first exhibition, created with Baumeister, focuses on how bodily movement develops into a form of skill and expression through repetition and training. Baumeister linked that idea to concepts drawn from Korean onggi earthenware and pansori, and choreographer Kim Sul-jin directed the performance. The exhibition space itself is arranged so that visitors move, observe, make and reflect in sequence.
The second exhibition, "ABOUT THE 1," takes Nike's signature sneaker, the Air Force 1, as its subject. Thirty Korean artists, including Muddycap, Jang Ye-eun, Chae Beom-seok and Kim Jun-su, reinterpret the shoe through their own experiences and creative languages. Their works draw on memories of first encountering the Air Force 1 in 2001, the cultural mood of that time and the influences shaping their work today. The result shows how a single sneaker can expand into different stories depending on personal experience and historical context.
Alongside the exhibitions, Nike has organized programs on sneakers, film and community. Baumeister is taking part in a live talk, and the film "My Nike" (2002) will be screened. "This exhibition aims to highlight the moments when a single icon expands into diverse stories depending on personal experience and cultural context," a Nike official said.
