US Senator Dave McCormick visited Hanwha Ocean's Geoje Shipyard.
Hanwha Ocean said Oct. 8 that McCormick, a Republican senator, visited its Geoje Shipyard on Oct. 7 to review its shipbuilding infrastructure and production capabilities.
McCormick boarded the Pyeongtaek, an Ulsan-class Batch-III frigate currently under construction, to inspect Hanwha Ocean's naval shipbuilding capabilities. Pyeongtaek is the fifth vessel in the Ulsan-class Batch-III program and the newest ship in the class.
Hanwha Ocean explained on site the company's role in expanding South Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation and ways to work with Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
Hanwha Philly Shipyard was launched after Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Systems acquired Philly Shipyard from Aker ASA in 2024. The shipyard builds commercial vessels, government special-purpose vessels, specialized vessels for the maritime industry and military vessels. It has so far delivered four National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMVs). In July, it won an order from the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) for Missile Range Instrumentation Vessels (MRIVs).
Hanwha Philly Shipyard has continued to expand hiring and workforce training since the acquisition. Its current workforce stands at about 2,500, roughly double the level at the time of the acquisition.
McCormick is the US senator representing Pennsylvania, where Hanwha Philly Shipyard is located. He visited the shipyard with US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in April last year, stressing the need to rebuild the US shipbuilding industry. In August of the same year, he publicly backed Hanwha Group's plan to invest $5 billion in Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
